Uhu takes its name from the Hawaiian parrotfish, whose grazing turns coral into the white sand of the islands’ beaches. Its scales are salvaged Big Island koa in browns, golds and reds, light to dark, set off by white sapwood. The wood was chosen by ear: logs struck with the back of a hatchet, kept only where the pitch rang high and sound. Kapa pattern runs through the curving scales, and the colors scatter the way they do on a living fish. The uhu is part of Hawaii, and Hawaii is in every uhu.
