46 × 46 × 1.5 in
Kupuna looks out through the windows of a grandparent’s house onto an older Hawaii. The diagonal lattice, a European form that took root in the islands, is cut from white sapwood; its diamond panes hold salvaged koa in a wide range of tones, with end grain set at the crossings for its darker color. Through the panes, plain pieces show the landscape and patterned ones the culture. It is the view the elders knew: land and people seen together, through a frame that came from elsewhere and became part of home.
