43 × 19 × 1.3 in

Kipuka depicts a kīpuka: the island of older ground that a lava flow parts around and leaves intact. It is worked in dark and light old-growth koa salvaged from a kīpuka, outlined in pin lines of white sapwood. Small triangles at the border are the sharp rock of the surrounding flow; larger triangles within, the stones and soil it spared; flower forms in the crescent shape of the koa leaf mark where the trees stand. The piece is made from the place it shows.
