Honorable Mention, Hawaii’s Woodshow™ 2021

Hawaii Sumotori takes one form and lets it read two ways: as the malo worn by Hawaiian men, and as the mawashi of the sumo ring. The belt wraps around the panel’s edges as it would around the wearer’s waist. It is worked in salvaged old-growth koa, light and dark, with pin lines of white sapwood and traditional kapa pattern throughout. The piece honors Hawaii’s sumo champions — Konishiki, Akebono and Musashimaru — and the Israel Kamakawiwoʻole song that celebrated them, Tengoku Kara Kaminari: two island traditions meeting in a single garment. Honorable Mention, Hawaii’s Woodshow, 2021.
